It’s always a pleasure to play at home. Especially when it’s in a proper place, with the proper music and crowd.
Marula Café (both in Madrid & Barcelona) is an oasis for music lovers in Spain. But also is for those scarce vinyl DJs into funk, soul, latin and disco grooves with no fillers. Its customers, composed by regulars and random visitors, are mostly a well-balanced (I should say well-educated) audience and they know what to expect inside. Basically open-minded, eager to enjoy the night while keeping odd song requests to the minimum and very spontaneous on the dancefloor, as long as the energy keeps flowing between them and the DJ with a healthy variety of rhythms; avoiding long and dull mixes at constant BPMs, so common in those mostly computerized, auto-synced and quantized DJ sets of today.
The Marula Barcelona’s resident DJs are doing an awesome job for the last decade, keeping the weekends of this medium-sized club on fire: better known as The Presidentes (the big boss Antonio Requena, record dealer Machito Boogaloo from Barcelona City Records and veteran DJ Harry Callahan -also half of the great label Rocafort Records), their nights are a journey through the best afrolatin sounds, all sorts of funk and soulful disco, brazilian rarities and boogie beats.
If you are in Barcelona (or Madrid), you definitely should stop by Marula Café. Also keep an eye on their program of concerts and live acts, with top-notch local and international funky bands mostly every week. Oh, also drinks are good, and the bar staff is friendly.
It has been a pleasure both as a listener and DJ. Thanks and see you next time!
