May Saturday 11th 2019 FUNK -is what we play- @ Ying Yang’s Shanghai

Funk, jazz, soul, fusion, crossover, disco, boogaloo, latin soul.. Like George Clinton (Parliament-Funkadelic) said: ‘ Funk is an attitude! ‘

On may 11th, a collective of local and international DJs will launch FUNK -is what we play-

, taking over YY’s, one of the coolest underground bars in Shanghai since 1996.

This is a brief introduction to the sounds of FUNK

James Brown, the Godfather of Soul and progenitor of Funk.

Inventor of funk, powerful soul singer, early rock ‘n’ roll star, disco innovator: James Brown had an incalculable influence on modern music.

Motown has been paving the way for music and culture for 60 years.

That doesn’t mean that we won’t play soul gems from its eternal rival Stax and some rarities as well..

Jazz-funk, fusion, acid-jazz & hip-hop

A bit of soulful Disco!

And latin soul – latin funk – boogaloo – afrocuban sounds!

DJ Zulu, of world-renowned Barcelona, has been an avid vinyl collector, and ‘crate digger’ for the last 22 years of his life, and according to the man himself, it’s time well-spent.

Zulu knows more than a thing or two in his repertoire. He started his musical voyage playing in clubs and radio shows during the late 90s’ acid jazz, and rare groove era across all Europe.

Captain Batty: the man behind ‘Old-School Funk & Soul’ , another popular vinyl-only event in Shanghai.

Hamburg native, music lover, guitarist of Shanghai’s band Front Page Crime and dedicated record collector.

These 2 guys met in a social event at The Melting Pot, DJ Rochaos’ record store in Shanghai.. and they soon decided to team up for the cause: improving the sonic quality of your nights out in Shanghai.. and reducing your probabilities of getting fake stuff as well: Real music = real people! 🙂

DJ Soulark from Chengdu first came into contact with deep funk/soul music through hip-hop. After five years studying in Japan, influenced by friends, he came into contact with vinyl. He collected a lot of records in Japan, famous for its rich vinyl resources. After returning to China, Soulark started DJing. In the tide of computer/USB, He always insisted on using only vinyl to play songs. In a country where vinyl records are not common, he still uses his keen sense of smell to dig into various crates.

In the current electric current trend, he still insists on playing his favorite roots music from 70s/80s, which has also won a group of listeners.

February Saturday 16th 2019 DJ Zulu @ Malanga Café Ibiza Café is another favorite spot, not only in world-renowned Ibiza, but for all the funk lovers across the globe.

Malanga Café is another favorite spot, not only in world-renowned Ibiza, but for all the funk lovers across the globe.

Far from the typical concept of a loud super-club filled with shiny celebrities, bottle service and other usual gimmicks on the island, Malanga offers an intimite space for music fans where everyone, customers and performers, can connect instantly: a DJ or two, a live band or all of them together.

Good vibes and raw energy can be perceived all over the place: if you go to Malanga Café and don´t start dancing right away, you probably won´t last long. Zero pretensions. Indeed, people go to dance to good music there. As simple as that.

After 3 years operating, the bar took good care of its program, recruiting every gatekeeper of the groove around and beyond. Nowadays places like Malanga are tailormade for those soul survivors: heavyweight funk, soul, disco, latin & afro DJs with over 2 decades of experience are their average guests on the decks.

They also host super-solid live bands which are as groovy as you can imagine. And of course, the crowd too: a healthy mix of mature music enthusiasts, spontaneus dancers, club patrons taking a rest from their money-making business and long-term residents looking for real music and real people.

It took a bit to find the right time for a gig there due to my long-term residence in Asia. But it was worth the wait. A long night with good music and friendly people.

Many thanks to Enrique (DJ Bebe) and Juan Soul for their professionality and great work: top DJs, dedicated businessmen and fantastic human beings.

December Friday 7th 2018 DJ Zulu @ Funkytown Chengdu

Decided to leave the hustle and bustle of Shanghai for a few days, I headed to the Wild wild West for a bit longer than a weekend. Well, a place I’ve never been before in China: Chengdu city, capital of Sichuan Province (the land of pandas, spicy food and beautiful women, some people say)

One of the main reasons for my visit was a couple of bookings, including a gig at a small bar in the center called Funkytown.

Every DJ loves Funkytown. Cause yeah, it’s incredibly small. It’s incredibly crowded in and out and it’s also extremely fun to pass by or work there. Real DJs love authentic places over business, hype, glamour and popularity in a similar fashion as how real food lovers choose restaurants.

The day after i joined an underground event in the parking lot of a shopping mall with about 20 other DJs, where local hip-hop dancers, poppers and lockers took over the improvised dancefloor for an epic battle. It was really interesting to see these scenes growing strong and healthy in such a remote place!

In overall: I made a few friends, caught a massive cold (plan to go to see the pandas cancelled), tried some good food.. yes spicy. And yes, women are very beautiful too.

Chengdu will be a “funky town” as long as those young event organizers and local DJs keep pushing forward with their unconditional love for music.

It was good to be there!
